Reflexology: A time tested therapy for better health. |

Since ancient times reflexology has been used to encourage the natural, self-healing abilities of the human body. Reflexology in Ancient TimesFrom the early civilizations of the Far East and Egypt to tribal communities of the Americas, hand and foot work has been a time-honored healing method. According to American physician Dr. William Fitzgerald, developer of our modern zone therapy, some form of pressure point treatment was in use 5,000 years ago in India and China. Japanese reflexologists trace their branch of "sokushinjutsu" to a therapy used in India and brought to China by Buddhist monks, and then on to Japan in the 2nd or 3rd century B.C. As early as the 4th century B.C., China had its own form of foot therapy and medical diagnosis through observation of the feet. The picture in the top corner of this page is an excerpt from an ancient Egyptian wall painting of the 6th Dynasty (approx. 2400 B.C.) found at Saqqara in the tomb of Ankhmahor, who was an ancient Egyptian physician. The complete picture depicts two men working on the feet and hands of two other men. Statues of Buddha in China and Japan, and Vishnu, the Hindu god in India, show markings of specific areas on the feet. Much later (approx. 1300 AD) Marco Polo as well as Dominican and Franciscan missionaries brought this work to Europe and other areas of the world. Zone therapy reportedly was in use in 16th century Europe. The Native American peoples made use of "foot doctors" for generations, whose knowledge was thought to have been passed down by the Inca civilization. Reflexology in the 19th and 20th CenturiesIt wasn't until the 19th century that scientific investigation of pressure points began with the work of British and German physicians investigating the nervous system and reflex actions. In the early 1900's, a Dr. Fitzgerald in Vienna rediscovered these theories. Dr. Joe Riley, an American physician joined Dr. Fitzgerald in his work where they mapped out zones on the body and used pressure on certain points to create numbness in target areas of the body. Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist and nurse working for Dr. Riley discovered techniques that promoted faster self healing. It is largely due to Eunice Ingham's work and travels promoting reflexology, that we have reflexology today. Reflexology TodayReflexology is viewed primarily as a stress reduction and relaxation technique. Although this may sound simplistic, the effects of the treatment can be profound. Neurologically, the activation of receptors in the hands and feet changes the tempo and tone of the body by sending new messages into the system and allowing the body to better communicate with itself. Energetic PathwaysNeurologic receptors are not the only agent involved in reflexology. Energy pathways (zones) similar to but not the same as acupuncture meridians are stimulated and cleared of energy blockages. 6 major acupuncture meridians pass through and end in the feet and they are also stimulated during a reflexology session. Benefits of ReflexologySome of the positive results of regular reflexology sessions are: a relaxation of tension, normalization of gland and organ function (great for PMS sufferers); improved circulation; reduction of pain (acute and chronic); improved effectiveness of medication; reduced need for medication; decrease of free radicals; and a wonderful light glowing feeling throughout your body! © Liz Oertel, LLC 2002 To schedule a reflexology session with Liz, contact her at (203) 323-9455, or through her website: www.reflexologyandreiki.com.
